What's Happened With Sandalwood?
Several years ago we were notified of a substantial cost increase in bringing in our Sandalwood Products. We decided to do some research and find the true root of the problem.
The demand for Sandalwood world-wide has increased dramatically over the past 30 years. Along with its general popularity as a pleasing scent, its use in Aromatherapy has soared in this country and in Europe. Sandalwood oil is regarded as a luxury item in the Middle East, and it is also one of the few approved scents for use in the Islamic Religion. Sandalwood is therefore a good cash crop, but it can only be harvested by cutting down the trees - they can't be tapped for the oil, like maple syrup. And these are slow-growth trees, taking 60 years to mature. It could still be a controlled harvest, but smuggling & poaching in India are a major factor in the destruction & endangerment of the trees. 60 Kilograms of oil can be extracted from a ton of heartwood. The heartwood inside the tree is only well developed in the tree after 60 years. Yet trees are being cut down as young as 18 years old!
Along with these "people associated uses" which are contributing to the endangerment of Sandalwood, there are natural causes as well. The new saplings that spring up eagerly during monsoons are often destroyed in seasonal forest fires. Also, Spike Disease invades the tree to diminish leaf growth, and if all the leaves die, the tree dies itself within 2 to 3 years.
In view of these facts, we felt the most responsible decision was to discontinue our Sandalwood products. We thank you for your support and understanding.
